The Renal Sciences Department at Fortis Mohalisaved the life of a 9-year-old child who had been suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease via a Kidney Transplant Surgery. The child had been suffering from a complex urinary tract infection since the age of 1.5 years and had also been hospitalized on multiple occasions. At 3 years of age, she was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and CAKUT (congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract) – an anatomical abnormality since birth. The young patient underwent several surgeries till the age of 7 years to rectify the defect. However, her condition continued to deteriorate and she was diagnosed with kidney failure at the age of 7. As the Patient’s creatinine levels continued to increase, she was put on dialysis(filtering waste and water from the blood) thrice a week.
Despite this, hersymptoms did not subside and she continued to have low haemoglobinlevels for which she received multiple blood transfusions. She also had multiple dialysis catheter insertions, because of which her veins were thrombosed (blocked) and had contracted blood infection through the dialysis line. The Patient also complained of persistent headaches due to high blood pressure and this impacted her growth.
Medical investigations revealed that the Patient’s urinary bladder was abnormal and the major vascular supply to the body was not good. A multidisciplinary team at Fortis Mohali including — Dr Sunil Kumar, Senior Consultant and Kidney Transplant Surgeon; Dr Sahil Rally, Attending Consultant, Kidney Transplant; Dr Anna Gupta, Associate Consultant, Renal Sciences and Kidney Transplant; Dr SK Singh, Director,Urology and Robotic Surgery; Dr Dharmender Aggarwal, Consultant, Urology, Uro-Oncology and Robotic Surgery; and Dr Vivek Agarwal, Consultant, Neuro-intervention and Interventional Radiology, Fortis Mohali — thoroughly examined the case and planned the surgery.
Finally, her parents brought her to Dr Anna Gupta, who advised them for a kidney transplant surgery. The Patient’s 32-year-old mother was accepted as the donor.
The team of doctors led by Dr Anna Gupta and Dr Sahil Rallyconducted the 15-hour-long Kidney Transplant Surgery. The Recipient Surgery was conducted first and after ensuring the technical feasibility and possible success of the operation, the donor surgery was started.
