First leadless pacemaker implantation has been successfully conducted at Fortis Mohali. Leadless pacemakers are about the size of a vitamin capsule and are extremely helpful for patients who need a pacemaker and have high lung pressures. A team of doctors led by Dr Arun Kochar treated the patient with state-of-the-art technology by implanting a permanent leadless pacemaker.
Dr Arun Kochar, Additional Director, Department of Cardiology at Fortis Hospital Mohali informed, an 83-year-old woman who was having fever along with multiple comorbidities was successfully treated. She was suffering from coronary artery disease hypertension and slow heartbeat (Bradycardia) and her Holter analysis had revealed significant sinus pauses, while she also had severe Mitral Regurgitation along with pulmonary artery hypertension. In view of her comorbidities, it was decided that leadless pacemaker should be given to her, so that her pulmonary artery hypertension is not aggravated.
As compared to a conventional pacemaker, leadless pacemaker size is about 90 percent smaller. It is devoid of many wires, which connects to a conventional pacemaker to the heart chamber. Leadless pacemaker doesn’t have any pacemaker site complication in the chest wall or wire related complications. It is of the size of vitamin capsule or AAA battery. Leadless pacemaker is implanted through a vein in the leg and is directly implanted in the heart chamber.
Dr Arun Kochar said, “This minimally invasive procedure is patient friendly and allows patient to heal better without any complication. It is done conducted under local anesthesia and has successful outcomes in patients in the long run.”
