The Robotic and Kidney Transplant Department, Fortis Hospital Mohali, has given a ray of hope to patients requiring kidney transplant by launching the world-class facility ‘SMART’ (Scarless Magnified Advanced Robotic Kidney Transplantation) – a new procedurecarried out using the 4th Generation robot, ‘Da Vinci Xi System’. With this, Fortis Mohalihas become the first hospital in Punjab and the second facility in North India to offer robotic surgery for kidney transplant.
Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, Director – Urology, Robotics and Kidney Transplant Surgery, Fortis Mohali hasconducted more than a thousand kidney transplant surgeries. Dr Ranjan recently conducteda miraculous surgery on a 57-year-old patient Manoj Kumar who weighed 138 Kgsand had other co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea, which posed a risk to his health and made the transplant risky and challenging.
The Patienthad been experiencing high blood pressure, fluid build-up (edema), decreased red blood cells, weak bones and fatigue. This had raised his creatinine levels following which he visited several hospitals and was advised dialysis. However, as the Patient’s health condition continued to deteriorate, he finally met Dr Ranjan at Fortis Mohali last month.Post medical evaluation, Dr Ranjanadvised the Patient to undergo SMARTRobotic Kidney TransplantSurgery– a minimal invasive surgery which provides a 3D view of the operative field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Parts of the body which are difficult to reach with the human hand can be accessed through robot-assisted arms that can rotate 360 degrees. Robotic kidney transplant is the best modality particularly for an obese patient.
Discussing the case, Dr Ranjan, said, “The Patientunderwent Robotic Kidney Transplant Surgerywherein he received a kidney from his wife. He had an uneventful post-operative recovery and was able to walk on his own the next day.We also counselled him on maintaining the ideal weight and consuming a balanced diet. The Patient is leading a normal life today and weighs around 88 Kgsnow.”
Explaining the benefits of robotic surgery, Dr Ranjan, added, “Robotic Surgery has better clinical outcomes compared to conventional surgeries as there is less blood loss, less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. In stark contrast to the traditional open procedure, which involves 25-30 cms cut on the body, the new technique involves a small 6-cm smartly placed incision, which is non-muscle cutting[RS1] and allows the patient to resume their daily activities within three to four days. The advanced state-of-the-art Robotic Surgical System has revolutionized kidney transplant surgeries, apart from being precise and magnified, it does not cause any major surgical trauma.”
