The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. The thyroid gland is responsible for creating hormones that regulate the rate of your metabolism and hence assist the body in utilising this energy. Thyroid diseases cause the synthesis of thyroid hormones to be disrupted, which can either impede or speed up metabolism.
Difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism:
When hormone levels go too low, you may experience a variety of thyroid symptoms, including an abrupt and unanticipated weight change. The most prevalent symptom of this illness known as hypothyroidism is weight gain.
Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, occurs when the thyroid produces more hormones than the body requires, resulting in weight loss. Medical specialists, on the other hand, argue that hypothyroidism is significantly more common than hyperthyroidism.
According to health professionals, there are a number of indications that indicate you may have thyroid problems:
· Swelling- A visible swelling or enlargement in the neck indicates that something is amiss with the thyroid. Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can both cause a goitre. Thyroid cancer or nodules, which are tumours that form inside the thyroid, can cause swelling in the neck.
· An instantaneous shift in heartbeat- Anyone with a thyroid issue will notice a change in heartbeat. It depends on the person’s body and the disease they’re dealing with. Hypothyroid patients may discover that their heart rate is slower than usual. The heart may race as a result of hyperthyroidism. It can also cause high blood pressure and the sensation of a hammering heart, as well as other heart issues.
· Hair loss is another indicator that thyroid hormones are out of balance. Hair loss is caused by both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in this example. Hair growth is feasible in the majority of cases when the thyroid has been treated.
· Changes in energy levels- Suffering from thyroid problems causes a slew of lifestyle and physical changes. It also has an effect on your energy levels and allows for mood swings. Both conditions have opposing effects on the body, for example, hypothyroidism causes patients to feel fatigued, sluggish, and depressed, whereas hyperthyroidism causes anxiety, sleeping problems, restlessness, and irritation.
· May feel hot or cold- Thyroid issues can cause rapid changes in body temperature. Persons with hypothyroidism may feel colder than usual, whereas people with hyperthyroidism have excessive sweating and feel hotter.
Other hypothyroidism symptoms, according to medical specialists, include:
· Brittle nails and dry skin
· Tingling or numbness in the hands
· Constipation is a common complaint among people.
· Menstrual irregularities
Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, can create various symptoms in the body, such as:
· Muscle twitching
· Hands trembling
· Problems with vision
· Diarrhoea is a common ailment that affects both men and women.
