Tech Intervention to Reduce Maternal Death

Post Partum Haemorrage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality all across the Nation. Punjab State Council
for Science and Technology has partnered with AIIMS-Bathinda to implement project focused on low cost
interventions to reduce PPH- induced maternal mortality through demonstrating innovative interventions under
Mission Tandrust Punjab supported by Directorate of Environment & Climate Change-GoP. A state level workshop
was organized at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, to train healthcare professionals of
district Moga, Ferozpur and Faridkot, with an aim to reduce MMR of Punjab, which is higher compared to National
figure. Over 100 Medical Officers, Gynecologists & other healthcare professionals attended the workshop
mobilized through Department of Health and Family Welfare.
Dr. Rajiv Sood, Vice Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFHUS) Faridkot inaugurated the
workshop and lauded the efforts of Science and Technology Department and AIIMS, Bathinda for this initiative. He
emphasized on the need to develop Indian guide lines including referral protocols for health institution for
managing Maternal Motality. In the Opening Session Dr. Dapinder Kaur Bakshi, Joint Director, Punjab State Council
for Science & Technology informed that Non-Pneumatic Anti Shock Garment (NASG) and Uterine Balloon
Tamponade (UBT), two interventions have been already piloted in districts Bathinda & Faridkot in Phase I of
Project, saving 75 maternal lives affected with critical PPH. PSCST has now mobilized funds for phase II of Project
Under Mission Tandrust Punjab, where in these interventions would now be introduced in 10 other district of
Punjab.
Dr. Lajya Devi Goyal, Head Deptt. of Gynecology, AIIMS Bathinda informed that GGSMC-Faridkot, GMC-Amritsar &
GMC-patiala will work together with AIIMS Bathinda in a hub and spoke model and these centers would be master
trained for providing training to delivery points of districts- Patiala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amritsar, Taran
Taran, Gurdaspur, Moga, Muktsar, Faridkot & Mansa. She further informed that the first workshop for Patiala,
Sangrur, Fatehgarh sahib has already been organized and this is a second workshop for Moga Faridkot and
Ferozpur.
Dr. Chandrashekhar, Civil Surgeon,emphasized on integration of critical factors like anemia, high risk pregnancy,
timely referrals for holistic approach and urged participating medical officers to adopt best practices to help
Punjab achieve the reduced MMR. Dr. Seema Grover, Head Deptt. of Gynecology, GGS-Medical informed that
GGSMC would be implementation center for PPH management for districts Moga & Ferozpur and Faridkot, The
other dignitaries included , Dr.Meenu Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS, Bathinda, Dr. R.K Gorea, Registrar, BFUHS,
Faridkot,Dr. Praveen,Prof ,Deptt of OBS & Gynae GGSMC,Faridkot.
